The Harvest Is In And Fall Colors Have Arrived

Fall colors have arrived in the North Fork valley.  While you can still admire the aspens at higher elevations, the cottonwoods along the North Fork of the Gunnison River rival them for gold.  Now is the time to visit Paonia, see the gold, and pick up local fruit and veggies at the farmer's markets before they close .  Don't forget to add wine to your list.  The wineries will be open until Nov. 3.

If you are starting to plan for the holidays and considering wine to accompany your entertaining, we can help you.  Stone Cottage Cellars, the Bross Hotel and the Living Farm Cafe have designed a special wine and dine weekend  (Nov. 1 - 3) for your pleasure and the selection of wines for the holidays.  Arrive Friday evening to enjoy a wine reception and meet the other guests.  Then after a good night’s rest, participate in a Saturday morning wine seminar and select the wine you’d like to have for your holiday entertaining.  In the afternoon tour the vineyard and pick up your selected case of wine.  Chef Michael of the Living Farm Cafe will serve a five-course winemaker’s dinner with an emphasis on the pairing of food and wine.  Cost: $635 per couple, plus tax and tips.  Includes: reception, two nights lodging, two breakfasts, seminar, tour, case of wine, wine dinner.  Reservations are required: 970-527-3444.

Dance through the Lavender

Summer is Here!  It's time to take a vacation, or get away for a weekend.  The perfect combination of events awaits you July 13-14 in Paonia.

Bed Cactus Brass Band is performing at the Blue Sage Center for the Arts on Saturday night, July 13 at 8:00 p.m.  A street band, Bad Cactus Brass Band has a distinctive take on New Orleans jazz and funk. Their original dance music unites young and old together in a Mardi Gras party, and their faithful renditions of second lines, spirituals and traditional jazz transport audiences to the parades and jazz funerals of New Orleans.  So pack up your dance shoes and join the dance.  (Ticket cost is only $12 per person.)

And, after you've danced the night away and gotten some rest at the Bross Hotel B&B, you're invited to Lamborn Mountain Farmstead.  There you can tour the lavender fields, see how lavender is grown, pick a bouquet and sample everything lavender.

Other things to do include:  wine tasting at local wineries, beer tasting at Revolution Brewery, hiking, biking, viewing/visiting the awesome Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, viewing the moose on the Grand Mesa while doing a little fishing, viewing the wildflowers on the West Elk Scenic Byway, purchasing local fruits and vegetables at farm markets.  Get out! Recognition of the Creative Work in the North Fork Valley

The North Fork Valley, which includes Paonia, has been recognized by the state as one of only seven creative districts in Colorado.  That's due to the work of many individuals who call the Valley their home.  Their work is not just painting beautiful pictures or making great music.  They create wonderful food on local farms, orchards, and ranches.  Then master chefs use those products to nourish the body much as the artisans and musicians nourish the soul.

The Bross Hotel invites you to visit Paonia and enjoy all that the valley has to offer - beautiful surroundings, fine food and wine, good music, and art in a variety of media.  Reservations can be made online or by calling 970-527-6776.

Uncorking the Wine

Experience the uniqueness of the North Fork wines during the North Fork Uncorked festival.  On the 15th and 16th of June the wineries of the North Fork will be holding special events, dinners, and tours to showcase the quality and uniqueness of the valley. This is an opportunity for you to see the valley through the eyes of a vineyardist and winemaker. Come learn why the North Fork valley is increasingly a go-to destination for all kinds of people, including photographers, foodies, and locavores.  The wineries of the North Fork are releasing the new vintages for the season and pairing them with tidbits to highlight the pairing of local food and local wine.

Additionally, you may get to taste some vintages that may sell out before half of the summer has passed. Small batch wines that are released in June often don’t last through July. With the quality of the wines we make come unavoidable limitations on quantity, making each product even more unique and special. Come try the new releases and experience the blossoming food and wine industry during the 2013 North Fork Uncorked festival. Tour the wineries, taste the new vintages and make reservations for a winemaker’s dinner by contacting one of the following wineries:

BLACK BRIDGE AND 5680 WINERIES @ FRESH AND WYLD FARMHOUSE: Enjoy a locally grown menu right from the Fresh & Wyld Garden.  RSVP: (970.527.4374).
